Changing Demographics —
19세기 중반 이전 average human lifetime은 약 30–40 years였고, high infant mortality와 infectious disease가 통계를 크게 끌어내렸다.
Vaccines, surgery, pharmaceuticals, medical devices 같은 medical technologies는 lifespan뿐 아니라 old age의 quality of life에도 기여했다. Technology → longevity → demographic structure → new technology needs라는 feedback이 이 장 전체의 출발점이다.
Median age 48
Older population의 비중이 높아 health, mobility, work, care, product/service design의 priorities가 달라진다.
Median age 19.7
Table 21.1 · Aging population의 challenge와 opportunity
| CHALLENGES | OPPORTUNITIES |
|---|---|
| Need for increased medical care | New products and services for seniors |
| Pressure on social security funds | Significant disposable income |
| Isolation | Multigenerational dialogue |
| Traffic accidents caused by seniors | Mobility as a service (MaaS) |
Source는 U.S.
Typical researcher/developer가 aged population에 속하지 않기 때문에 what is developed와 what is actually needed 사이에 structural gap이 생긴다.
Rogers의 Diffusion of Innovations와 Davis의 Technology Acceptance Model(TAM)은 general adoption을 설명하는 classic framework지만, older adults는 physical/cognitive capability, prior technology experience, social context가 다르다. Source는 이들이 independence, active life, social connection을 추구하는 wealthier and demanding consumers이며 technological benefit을 이해하고 new technology를 시도할 의지도 있다고 설명한다.
An Integrated Adoption Model — 제품특성만 보지 말고 individual·social·technology·delivery를 함께 본다
Lee & Coughlin의 10 core factors + user-interview extensions
Four aspects
Adoption is a service-system problem, not a device-only problem.
반면 Fig. 21.4는 Usability를 ease of learning/use, Value를 perceived practical benefits로 분리하고 §21.3에서 Usability를 다시 ease-of-use 의미로 다룬다.
Value, Cost, Support, Emotion — adoption
Perceived value/usefulness
Affordability
Source는 Verizon SureResponse personal emergency response system이 당시 US$250+ initial cost와 monthly payment를 요구하는 예를 든다.
Technical support
Plain-language manuals, readable presentation, technology literacy·computer anxiety·physical/cognitive differences를 고려한 training, use-case/scenario analysis가 권장된다.
Emotion and social connection
People은 physical/cognitive decline보다 loneliness/isolation을 더 두려워할 수 있다는 연구도 소개된다.
Independence: preventing stigmatization
Medication tracking + social communication demonstrator
Tablet에는 medication reminders, general to-do, messages from loved ones가 color-coded digital notes로 표시된다. Small digital globe는 LED color로 status를 표시한다: yellow는 복용시점, red는 missed dose, green은 on-time intake를 뜻한다.
Table 21.2 · Field-trial scores
| SYSTEM COMPONENT | OLDER ADULTS | ADULT CHILDREN | OVERALL |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overall system | 4.75 | 4.5 | 4.63 |
| Video chat | 4.25 | 4.25 | 4.25 |
| Yellow notes | 5 | 4.5 | 4.75 |
| Blue notes | 4.75 | 4 | 4.38 |
| Green notes | 5 | 4.5 | 4.75 |
| Red notes | 5 | 4.75 | 4.88 |
| Information globe | 4.5 | 4.5 | 4.5 |
Scale: 1 = very dissatisfied, 5 = very satisfied.
Source footnote는 missed dose 후 “catch up”할지 skip할지는 prescription-specific rule이며 software에 encode될 수 있다고 설명한다.
Confidence: freedom from intimidation and anxiety
Older adults가 new technology에 interested하더라도 high-tech device interaction의 confidence가 younger users보다 낮을 수 있다.
Universal Design — seniors
Definition
Senior-focused adoption research에서 나온 lesson은 beauty/aesthetics, robustness to user error, ease of use 같은 qualities가 younger adults와 children에게도 value를 준다는 점이다.
Usability: ease of learning and use
Perceived ease of use는 TAM, Diffusion of Innovations 등에서도 adoption determinant로 다뤄졌고, source는 computer mouse, email, health-information websites가 older adults에게 control difficulty와 error를 유발한 studies를 소개한다.
- Keep interfaces simple. Too many features, options, information으로 overwhelm하지 않는다.
- Use familiarity.
- Reduce dexterity/cognitive load.
- Direct manipulation.
Source는 iPad가 seniors 전용으로 designed/marketed되지 않았지만 direct-input interface와 large screen 때문에 ease of use에 적합한 example로 논의한다. Fig. 21.9에는 smart speakers, IoT-enabled household appliances, connected/potentially autonomous vehicles 등도 universal-design-compatible examples로 제시된다.
Early involvement, not late-stage usability testing
Older adults가 younger people과 다른 behavior를 보일 수 있으므로, needs와 characteristics를 specification 이전에 learn해야 한다.
Design and advertising should not stereotype
Roadmapping for Longevity — demographic segment가 아니라 lifecycle, identity, service ecosystem을 설계한다
